Many of us feel a sudden spike of panic when we spot a cockroach scurrying across the kitchen floor. It’s incredibly easy to let our minds jump to worst-case scenarios—assuming it’s a sign of poor hygiene, bad luck, or a failing home. But the reality is much less dramatic, and far more practical.

Cockroaches are highly adaptable survivors, and they don't appear randomly. If they keep showing up, your home is simply providing the four things they need most to survive: food, water, shelter, and access.

1. Food	Even microscopic crumbs, unsealed pantry items, sticky spots behind the stove, or leftover pet food in a bowl overnight.	Wipe it down. Make it a nightly habit to wipe the counters and sweep the floor. Store dry goods in airtight glass or hard plastic containers.
2. Water	A leaky pipe under the sink, condensation around the toilet base, or a damp sponge left in the sink. (Roaches can live a month without food, but only a week without water!)	Dry it out. Fix leaky faucets, wipe down the sink before bed, and hang up wet sponges or dishcloths so they dry completely overnight.
3. Shelter	Dark, tight, warm spaces. They love the corrugated texture of cardboard boxes, the backs of cabinets, and cluttered pantries.	Declutter and swap. Replace cardboard boxes (which they also eat!) with plastic bins. Clear out the clutter under the sink and behind appliances.
4. Access	Tiny gaps under the front door, cracks around plumbing pipes, or unsealed windows.	Seal the perimeter. Use weather stripping on doors, and fill gaps around pipes with steel wool and caulk (which they cannot chew through).
