Piper thought she was having an ordinary morning until a phone call from her daughter’s school changed everything. Her daughter, Letty, was safe, but several men had arrived together asking for her by name. They wore plant jackets, and their appearance brought back memories of Piper’s late husband, Jonathan, who had died three months earlier.

The previous night had already been emotional. Piper found Letty standing barefoot in the bathroom with kitchen scissors in one hand and a bundle of freshly cut hair in the other. The girl had cut it because a classmate named Millie, who was in remission, was being teased after losing her hair during treatment.
