Before My Husband Died, He Gave Me A Sealed Letter For A Stranger — Her First Question Terrified Me
Zane and I spent 34 years together.
He wasn't simply my husband. He was my closest friend, the person I trusted with everything, and the man beside me through nearly every chapter of my adult life. After that many years together, I thought there were very few things about him that I didn't know.
Then everything changed when Zane was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.
Our lives quickly became centered around hospital rooms, appointments, treatments, and long conversations about the future. I stayed by his side whenever I could, convinced that somehow we would find a way through it.
Looking back, I think Zane understood much sooner than I did that time was running out.
The Envelope
Two days before he died, we were alone in his hospital room.
Without saying much, Zane opened the drawer beside his bed and removed a sealed envelope.
There was a woman's name written across it.
I didn't recognize it.
He placed the envelope in my hands and made one final request.
If he didn't survive, I was supposed to personally deliver it to the woman whose name appeared on the front.
Then he gave me one strict instruction:
I was not to open it.
I wanted answers immediately.
Who was this woman?
Why had Zane written to her?
And why was it so important that I deliver the message myself?
But he was sick, and I couldn't bring myself to challenge him over something he clearly considered important.
After The Funeral
When Zane died, everything became a blur.
There were arrangements to make, people to contact, visitors arriving, and condolences to accept. Days passed before I even remembered the envelope.
Then I found it tucked inside my bedside drawer.
The promise came rushing back.
The following morning, I got into my car and drove nearly three hours to the address written on the envelope.
When a woman finally answered the door, I told her Zane's name.
Her expression changed instantly.
She looked frightened.
Without asking many questions, she took the envelope from my hand and opened it.
Her eyes moved across the first line.
Then she slowly looked up at me.
There was panic in her face.
Her voice was barely above a whisper when she asked:
“Did Zane tell you everything?”
