A heartbreaking loss has left a family mourning a woman whose life was closely connected to one of the most influential voices in soul music.

She was remembered by her daughter as a deeply loving mother whose influence extended far beyond her famous marriage. Her family described her as someone who spoke honestly, cared deeply, and remained devoted to the people she loved.

She also played a small but meaningful role in music history. After meeting a legendary singer as a teenager during the recording period surrounding one of his major songs, she later contributed background vocals to his 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up.” Their relationship eventually led to marriage in 1977, and they welcomed two children, Nona and Frankie, before divorcing in 1981.

Her connection to his music continued throughout their relationship. He dedicated the song “Jan” to her and also connected her name to his album I Want You.

Years after their marriage ended, she remained committed to preserving his memory and helping others understand the person behind the music. Her daughter said her mother wanted people to remember the man she had loved and the meaning behind his songs.

She was also the daughter of celebrated jazz musician Slim Gaillard, giving her own family history a strong connection to music.

The woman being remembered was Janis Hunter Gaye, who died on December 3 at age 66 at her Rhode Island home. Her cause of death was not publicly disclosed.

She is survived by her children Nona and Frankie, along with her sister Shawnn Monteiro, brother Mark, and grandson Nolan Pentz.
